Lesson: Music of the Great Depression

 

 

 

  1. Create a class set of  the lyrics of “Buddy Can you Spare a Dime”

  2. Have students read the lyrics and have a classroom discussion of the lyrics. 

  3. Find a version of the song "Buddy Can you Spare a Dime" sung by Bing Crosby. Classroom discussion about how this song makes people feel and why it became the anthem of the great depression.

  4. Play a version by Rudy Vallee        http://www.rhapsody.com/album/the-great-depression-american-music-in-the-30s   

  5. Classroom discussion about the two versions of the song and why the Bing Crosby version is remembered while the Rudy Vallee version is not.
